Apple is shifting its focus from introducing sweeping modern features to prioritizing stability and performance with its upcoming iOS 27, macOS 27, and watchOS 27 software ecosystem. The change in strategy, reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, marks a departure from recent years where the company frequently released feature-rich, but sometimes unfinished, updates.
The move comes after the introduction of the Liquid Glass design language in iOS 26 proved divisive among users. While visually striking, some reported difficulties with readability and distracting transparency effects. Personnel changes within Apple’s design team also played a role, with Alan Dye departing for Meta in late 2025 and Steve Lemay taking his place. Despite speculation that the new leadership would abandon “Liquid Glass,” sources indicate iOS 27 will not feature drastic changes to the design.
“The design of Liquid Glass took years to develop, so it won’t be replaced overnight,” Gurman stated. “Expect years of gradual improvements.” Apple is, however, developing a system-wide slider that will allow users to adjust the intensity of the glass effect, potentially addressing user concerns and offering greater control over the visual experience.
Stability Takes Center Stage
The emphasis on refinement echoes Apple’s 2009 release of OS X Snow Leopard, a landmark update focused on bug fixes, and stability. Engineers are currently concentrating on code cleanup, removing unnecessary features, and optimizing performance. This focus on a polished user experience is particularly relevant as the tech industry increasingly prioritizes reliability alongside innovation.
This shift isn’t simply about improving the current experience; it’s also about laying the groundwork for future hardware, including Apple’s highly anticipated foldable iPhone and a potential iPad-HomePod combination designed to serve as a smart home hub. A stable and robust operating system is crucial for a seamless experience on these new devices, particularly one with a foldable display that requires fluid transitions between views.
The AI Race Continues
Despite the focus on stability, Apple remains committed to artificial intelligence. Gurman reports that iOS 27 will include two major AI-powered features, building on work that was previously delayed. These include a next-generation Siri, powered by Google’s Gemini models, which was initially slated for release with iOS 26.
Beyond Siri, Apple is also exploring an AI-powered health assistant, potentially offered as part of a new Apple Health+ subscription. This assistant would analyze data from heart rate, sleep cycles, and daily activity to provide personalized lifestyle recommendations. The company may also introduce its first AI-driven web search functionality, directly challenging Google’s dominance in the search market.
The Google Gemini-based Siri will continue to evolve in iOS 27, leveraging Apple’s private cloud computing system to ensure user data remains secure and doesn’t transmit to Google servers. Processing will occur either locally on the device or within Apple’s closed cloud environment.
iOS 27 appears to be shaping up as a release many users have been waiting for: an update that doesn’t aim to reinvent the wheel, but instead delivers a reliable, fast, and polished experience, potentially restoring the high standards previously associated with Apple’s software.
