Apple may be poised to bring its ProMotion display technology to its more affordable iPhone lineup with the anticipated iPhone 19e, slated for release in early 2028. The move would represent a significant upgrade for the budget-friendly series, which currently utilizes standard 60Hz displays.
Reports originating from ZDNet Korea suggest the company is developing next-generation LTPO+ display technology to power this upgrade. ProMotion dynamically adjusts screen refresh rates based on user activity, resulting in smoother scrolling, more responsive touch interactions, and improved power efficiency – features previously reserved for Apple’s premium iPhone models.
The new technology utilizes oxide materials in both switching and driving transistors, offering faster response times and better energy efficiency. Apple is expected to initially introduce this LTPO+ technology in its flagship devices, including potential use in a future foldable iPhone, before expanding it to more affordable models like the iPhone 19e.
While the potential upgrade is promising, details remain uncertain. Not all ProMotion displays are identical; earlier versions ranged from 10Hz to 120Hz, while newer iterations can drop as low as 1Hz to maximize battery life. The implementation on the iPhone 19e will likely depend on the successful rollout of the LTPO+ technology.
Currently, the iPhone 17e features a 60Hz LTPS TFT panel, and the iPhone 18e is expected to continue using the same technology. This potential shift in 2028 would bring Apple’s budget line more in line with competing Android phones that already offer 120Hz displays at similar price points. The advancement in display technology underscores the ongoing competition within the smartphone market to deliver enhanced user experiences.
The timing of the upgrade to LTPO panels for the 19e is still subject to change, depending on the readiness of the new LTPO+ technology.
