  • The IAEA has so far found no damage to Iranian nuclear facilities.
  • Attempts to contact Iranian nuclear regulatory authorities have been unsuccessful.
  • An Iranian official claims the Natanz nuclear facility was hit.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported Monday it has found no indication of damage to Iranian nuclear facilities following recent military operations. The development comes amid heightened regional tensions and raises concerns about the security of nuclear sites in the Middle East. Attempts to reach Iranian nuclear regulatory authorities for comment have been unsuccessful.

According to the IAEA’s current assessment, neither the Bushehr nuclear power plant nor the research reactor in Tehran, or any other nuclear facilities in Iran, have been damaged or struck. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi stated this during a special session of the organization’s Board of Governors in Vienna on Monday.

Grossi warned that a mass evacuation of cities across the Middle East could grow necessary if civilian nuclear facilities are attacked. “We cannot rule out a possible release of radioactive material with potentially severe consequences, including the need to evacuate areas as large or larger than major cities,” the IAEA chief said at the start of the emergency session.

Iran and Russia Observe Reason to React

But, Iran’s representative to the IAEA claimed that the Natanz nuclear facility was struck on Sunday. A Russian diplomat previously urged the IAEA to respond “in connection with the events in Iran,” though the specifics of that call for action remain unclear.

Grossi appealed to all parties for military restraint, warning that Iran and many other countries in the region possess operating nuclear power plants and research reactors, as well as associated fuel storage sites, increasing the risk to nuclear safety. So far, “no increase in radiation levels above normal background levels has been detected in countries bordering Iran,” he said.

Israel and USA attack Iran – Tehran strikes back

Israel and the USA attacked targets in Iran on February 28. Iran has confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah (Sayed) Ali Khamenei. The country is responding with counterattacks on US bases in several countries. Tensions in the Middle East are escalating.
