Iran Attacks Israel: Middle East Conflict Live Updates

Escalating tensions in the Middle East have prompted widespread concern and prayer among Catholics as conflict between Israel, the United States and Iran intensifies. The exchange of strikes, beginning on February 28, 2026, has created a highly uncertain security situation across the region, with repercussions felt as far as Qatar and Bahrain.

The conflict began with joint strikes by Israeli and U.S. Forces on Iran, reportedly targeting senior leaders including 86-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader. U.S. President Donald Trump characterized the attacks as “major combat operations” aimed at overthrowing the Iranian regime and defending American interests. Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz announced a “preemptive strike” against Iran, declaring a state of emergency within Israel.

Iran has responded with retaliatory strikes targeting Israel and U.S. Interests in several Middle Eastern nations. Casualties are still being assessed as the exchanges continue, and reports indicate damage to civilian infrastructure, including a girls’ school in Minab, Iran, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi.

Amidst the escalating violence, Pope Leo XIV issued an appeal for peace on Sunday, urging all parties to return to diplomacy and prevent the situation from descending into an “irreparable abyss.” The call for de-escalation reflects growing international alarm over the potential for a wider conflict.

Bishop Aldo Berardi, Apostolic Vicar of Northern Arabia, expressed his gratitude for the Pope’s appeal, noting the situation is “truly complicated.” Speaking from his vicariate house in Awali, Bahrain, Bishop Berardi emphasized the uncertainty of the moment and the need for prayer. Churches across the Arabian Peninsula have been closed due to the security concerns.

“We were, of course, expecting an intervention from the Pope this Sunday, since the situation is truly complicated,” Bishop Berardi said in an interview with Vatican News on March 1, 2026. “The region is already very complex because of geopolitics and its economic implications, and now, with this Israeli-American intervention, it has unleashed—I would not say hell—but something we were not expecting.”

Bishop Berardi sent a communiqué to all priests and men and women religious within his vicariate – covering Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Qatar – on February 28, urging them to grab shelter, remain united in prayer, and follow the instructions of local authorities. The development underscores growing regional instability and the potential for broader consequences.

Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, warned of a “tragedy of immense proportions.” Catholics across the Middle East are responding with shock, sorrow, and prayer as the conflict unfolds. Further reports indicate that U.N. Secretary General António Guterres has also pleaded for a return to negotiations, warning of the grave consequences of continued conflict.
