Dimona, Israel – At least 40 people were injured Saturday night when an Iranian ballistic missile struck Dimona, a city in southern Israel that is home to a nuclear facility, according to the Israeli military. The attack marks a significant escalation in regional tensions and comes amid conflicting reports regarding strikes on nuclear facilities in both Iran and Israel.
The Israeli military reported that a ten-year-old boy was seriously injured with shrapnel wounds, and a woman sustained injuries from glass shards. An additional 37 people were treated for minor injuries, Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service stated on X.
Iran’s state television claimed the Dimona attack was a retaliatory strike for a Saturday assault on the Natanz nuclear facility. However, Israel has denied responsibility for the Natanz strike. The United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated it had received no reports of damage to the Negev Nuclear Research Center and detected no unusual radiation levels, but added it was “closely monitoring the situation.”
The attack on Dimona, which houses Israel’s primary nuclear research center established in 1958, raises concerns about the potential for further escalation. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied possessing nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, U.S. And Israeli forces reportedly attacked the Natanz uranium enrichment facility on Saturday morning, according to Portfolio.hu. This development follows a statement from former President Donald Trump on Friday evening indicating he was considering a gradual de-escalation of U.S. Involvement in a potential war with Iran, as the U.S. Military reportedly nears its objectives.
The U.S. Has temporarily suspended sanctions on Iranian oil purchases for 30 days in an effort to alleviate rising oil prices stemming from the conflict. Despite these measures, Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles early Saturday, targeting Israel and a U.S.-British military base in the Indian Ocean, a move described as surprising.
According to Euronews, an Iranian rocket too struck the city of Arad.
The escalating exchange of attacks underscores the fragility of the regional security situation and the potential for wider conflict. The development underscores growing regional tensions and could influence future diplomatic talks.
