Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has voiced support for the Iranian people as tensions escalate following attacks in the region. The developments approach amid concerns over Iran’s nuclear program and broader regional stability.
“We stand behind the courageous Iranian people. Their rights must be respected,” Kristersson stated on X on Saturday, February 28, 2026. He added that he is closely monitoring how the situation in Iran could affect Swedish security.
The Prime Minister also announced he will convene a meeting of the National Security Council to discuss the potential implications for Sweden and the safety of Swedish citizens. This move underscores the government’s concern over the evolving situation and its potential ramifications.
Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard emphasized that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons, describing it as “a too great threat to the rest of the world and in the hands of a terrible regime that oppresses and kills its own people,” according to Göteborgs-Posten.
Stenergard also called for de-escalation and the protection of civilians, urging all parties to “beseech themselves” and return to negotiations aimed at a peaceful transition of power in Iran. She refrained from commenting directly on the legality of attacks carried out by the United States and Israel under international law.
The Swedish government has already imposed sanctions on the Iranian regime in conjunction with the European Union. According to Sweden Herald, the government is following the events “hour by hour” after weekend attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, including bombings of three sites by the U.S.
The situation remains fluid, with continued attacks between Israel and Iran. The focus now shifts to Tehran’s response, which experts believe will be a key determinant of how the conflict unfolds.
