Canadians Stranded as Tensions Escalate in Middle East

The recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East is leaving Canadians stranded abroad, facing significant challenges and soaring costs for return flights. The situation follows Iranian attacks on a U.S. Base in Qatar after American bombing, according to reports from CBC.

Air Canada has suspended flights to both Israel and Dubai, exacerbating the difficulties for those seeking to return home. This development underscores growing regional instability and its impact on international travel. The airline’s decision comes amid heightened security concerns and evolving geopolitical risks.

Quebec residents are among those affected, with some reporting potential return ticket costs reaching as high as $6,000. “On n’est pas préparé à ça,” one Quebec resident in Dubai told TVA Nouvelles, expressing a lack of preparedness for the situation.

At Toronto Pearson International Airport, 26 flights have been cancelled and 246 delayed, impacting numerous airlines including Air Canada, WestJet, and Emirates. Travel And Tour World reports that travelers from Canada, India, Iran, the UAE, the US, Qatar, and Israel are all affected.

A Quebec resident currently in Qatar described the situation on the ground as “much calmer” than might be expected, according to 98.5 Montréal. However, the overall situation remains volatile, and Canadians in the region are urged to stay informed and follow any guidance issued by Global Affairs Canada.

“On vit d’heure en heure,” a Canadian in the Middle East told La Presse, highlighting the day-to-day uncertainty faced by those in the affected areas. The announcement could influence future diplomatic talks and travel advisories.

Air Canada has also suspended flights to Dubai, adding to the challenges faced by travelers. CityNews Montreal reports that the airline cited safety concerns as the reason for the suspension.
