Iran Gas Facilities Targeted: Drone Intercepted, Fires Reported

Saudi Arabia’s defense ministry stated on Wednesday that a drone approaching a gas facility in the Eastern Province was intercepted and destroyed, with no damage reported.

Meanwhile, Qatar’s interior ministry announced that a fire broke out at a major gas facility on the country’s northern coast following an Iranian attack. “Civil defense is extinguishing the fire in the Ras Laffan area following an Iranian attack,” the ministry said in a statement.

The incidents follow reports that the United States and Israel struck a significant Iranian gas facility near the Persian Gulf earlier on Wednesday, triggering a fire. Iran’s state television reported that “enemy – American and Zionist – missiles” struck part of the gas infrastructure in the South Pars Special Economic Energy Zone in Asaluyeh.

Ehsan Jahanian, deputy governor of the southern Bushehr province where the facility is located, was quoted by state television as saying, “A few moments ago, part of the gas infrastructure in the South Pars/North Dome megatank was hit by enemy missiles.”

The South Pars/North Dome field is the world’s largest known gas reserve, and approximately 70 percent of Iran’s natural gas is extracted from the site. Iran shares this massive field with energy giant Qatar and has been developing its portion of the reservoir since the late 1990s.

These events escalate tensions in a region already on edge following initial strikes against Iran by Israel and the United States on February 28, which reportedly killed a top Iranian leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and subsequently spread conflict throughout the Middle East.

The development underscores growing regional instability and the potential for further escalation as multiple nations become involved in the conflict.
