Tensions in the Middle East are escalating as France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have signaled their readiness to take defensive action against Iran, a move that underscores growing regional instability. The announcement, made on Sunday, March 1, 2026, comes after a series of escalating exchanges between Iran and its adversaries.

The European powers stated they are prepared to defend their interests and those of their allies in the region, should the situation continue to deteriorate. This commitment includes enabling “necessary and proportionate defensive measures” to dismantle Iran’s capacity to launch missiles and drones, according to a joint statement.

The leaders of the three nations expressed concern over what they described as Iran’s “reckless” attacks, which they said endangered both military personnel and civilians. “We urge Iran to immediately cease these reckless attacks,” the statement read. They also agreed to collaborate closely with the United States and regional allies to address the unfolding crisis.

The situation escalated on Saturday, February 28, 2026, following joint strikes by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets, resulting in the deaths of several high-ranking Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response, Iran launched a barrage of drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, U.S. Assets, and several Gulf nations.

According to reports, Iran’s attacks extended beyond the initial targets of the U.S. And Israel, reaching countries not directly involved in the initial military operations. These attacks included targeting military facilities in multiple countries.

“Iran’s reckless attacks have targeted close allies and threatened our military personnel and civilians throughout the region,” the statement continued.

Iran reportedly launched a series of missile and drone attacks against several Gulf states, claiming to be targeting U.S. Bases in retaliation for the earlier strikes. A multinational military base near Erbil in northern Iraq and a German military camp in eastern Jordan were also reportedly hit, though no casualties were reported.

The attacks followed an announcement by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard on Sunday, March 1, 2026, of a large-scale offensive following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Explosions were reported in Riyadh, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Manama, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv, with Israeli emergency services reporting at least nine fatalities in Beit Shemesh.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian labeled the killing of Khamenei a declaration of war against Muslims. “Iran considers it its duty and legitimate right to take revenge on the perpetrators and masterminds of this historic crime,” he stated.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi affirmed Iran’s commitment to self-defense, stating, “We do not see any limits for ourselves in defending our people, in protecting our people.”
