TEHERAN Iran is threatening to open a new front in its conflict with the United States and Israel. Tehran has warned it could block the strategically vital Bab al-Mandeb Strait if the U.S. Attacks Kharg Island.

Following its effective disruption of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, impacting roughly 20% of global oil shipments, Iran is now signaling the Bab al-Mandeb Strait – a key route connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden – could be its next target in the event of a U.S. Ground invasion.

“If the enemy wants to grab action on land on Iranian islands or elsewhere in our territory or to inflict costs on Iran with naval movements in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, we will open other fronts for them as a surprise so that their action will not only be of no benefit to them but will also double their costs,” an Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) source told Tasnim News Agency on Thursday, March 26, 2026.

Securing control of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait would threaten a crucial Red Sea trade route, handling an estimated $1 trillion in goods annually. The development underscores growing regional tensions and the potential for wider conflict.

“The Bab al-Mandab Strait is considered one of the world’s strategic straits, and Iran has the will and ability to create a fully credible threat to it,” the source added.
