Iran Significantly Increases Defenses on Kharg Island as U.S. Deploys Troops to the Region. Escalation Appears Imminent.

Iran has markedly strengthened its defenses on the strategically critical island of Kharg in recent weeks, according to multiple U.S. Media reports. Tehran has reportedly deployed additional military personnel, air defense systems, and mines to the island in the Persian Gulf, CNN reported, citing sources with knowledge of U.S. Intelligence. The leadership is preparing for the possibility of a U.S. Ground operation against the island, according to those sources. This development comes as global energy markets remain on edge amid broader regional instability.

The move coincides with what appears to be a renewed effort by U.S. President Donald Trump to seek a negotiated solution with Iran. But, Trump previously pursued talks, later declared them a failure, and then ordered an attack. Further escalation therefore appears likely.

Simultaneously, the U.S. aims to restore free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been partially blocked. The strait is one of the world’s most important oil trade routes.

While located off the Strait of Hormuz, Kharg Island remains central to the conflict. The island lies in the northern Persian Gulf, approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) off the southwestern coast of Iran, and covers an area of about 20 square kilometers (7.7 square miles). Around 90 percent of Iranian crude oil exports pass through the island, making Kharg a critical asset for Washington as a means of pressuring Tehran. Trump previously referred to the island as “Iran’s crown jewel.”

The U.S. Has already attacked Kharg Island during the conflict. Following airstrikes on March 13, U.S. Central Command (Centcom) stated that it had struck more than 90 military targets on the island, including storage facilities for naval mines, missile bunkers, and other military installations. Trump subsequently stated that the oil infrastructure was deliberately spared – “for reasons of decency.”

According to CNN, Iran has now secured Kharg Island with additional shoulder-launched air defense systems, as well as anti-personnel and anti-tank mines. These measures are intended to make a potential landing more difficult. Retired Admiral James Stavridis told the network that such an operation would be fraught with risk, and that U.S. Ground troops entering Iranian territory could expect to suffer heavy losses.
