TEHERAN – Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has revealed that his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in a joint attack by the United States and Israel whereas reciting the Quran. The announcement comes as Mojtaba Khamenei pledged to continue his father’s path and maintain national unity amidst escalating regional conflict.

“With your departure, all our hearts are grieving. You always longed for such a destiny, until Almighty God granted it to you while you were reading the Quran on the morning of the tenth blessed day of Ramadan,” Mojtaba Khamenei said in a speech, according to Republic World, Monday, March 16, 2026.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28 in the initial U.S. And Israeli strikes against Tehran, an attack that prompted retaliatory action from Iran and subsequently fueled a wider war in the Middle East. The escalating conflict has raised concerns about regional stability and prompted international calls for de-escalation.

“Our sincere thanks travel to our brave fighters who, at a time when our beloved nation and homeland were unjustly attacked by the leaders of the front of arrogance, blocked the enemy’s path with their powerful blows and shattered their illusions of being able to dominate our beloved country or even divide it,” Mojtaba Khamenei continued, highlighting Iran’s resilience against its adversaries, including the U.S. And Israel.

Mojtaba Khamenei stated he was present during the attack and witnessed his father’s death. He similarly reported that his wife, one of his sisters, a nephew, and the husband of another sister were also killed in the strikes. The loss of multiple family members underscores the personal toll of the conflict on Iran’s leadership.
