Moscow, Russia – Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, reportedly underwent leg surgery in Moscow after being injured in recent airstrikes, according to multiple reports. The development comes as speculation mounts regarding his condition and the future of Iran’s leadership following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei.
The surgery was reportedly offered by Russian President Vladimir Putin and took place at a medical facility within one of Putin’s residences, according to reports. A high-ranking source close to the new Iranian Supreme Leader confirmed that Khamenei was flown to Moscow on a Russian military plane as part of a highly classified operation.
The need for treatment in Moscow stemmed from injuries sustained during the initial U.S. And Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, requiring a fully equipped facility and close medical supervision, reports indicate. Iranian security services were reportedly concerned about leaks regarding Khamenei’s whereabouts, prompting the decision to seek medical care in Russia.
Putin personally proposed the treatment during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on March 12, and the offer was subsequently approved by Iranian officials, including Khamenei himself. Russian doctors, assisted by a team of Iranian physicians, provided the medical care.
Mojtaba Khamenei was named supreme leader earlier this week, succeeding his father, who was killed in the conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. He issued a written statement on Thursday vowing to continue efforts to disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and maintain attacks against U.S. Allies in the region.
Despite reports of his condition, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi previously claimed there was “no problem” with the new leader, according to LBC News. However, Khamenei has not made a public appearance since his appointment, fueling speculation about his health.
U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth remarked that the Iran leader had been left “disfigured” following reports claiming he was “in a coma and had lost a leg.” Former President Donald Trump likewise expressed uncertainty about Khamenei’s current condition on Saturday.
The lack of official confirmation from Iranian or Russian authorities regarding Khamenei’s medical treatment in Moscow continues to add to the uncertainty surrounding his health and leadership. The situation underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East and the potential for further escalation.
