Israel’s military announced it killed the head of intelligence for Iran’s Basij paramilitary force in an airstrike in Tehran. The strike marks a further escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, raising concerns about wider regional instability.
“Esmail Ahmadi, who served as the head of the intelligence unit of the Basij, was eliminated” during a March 17th strike targeting Basij commanders meeting in a tent, according to a statement from the Israeli army. The strike also resulted in the death of the organization’s leader, General Gholamreza Soleimani, as previously reported.
“In his role, Ahmadi played a central part in promoting and carrying out terrorist activities conducted by the Basij forces,” the statement continued. “He was also tasked, on behalf of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), with maintaining public order and the values of the regime.”
The Israeli military also confirmed the death of IRGC spokesperson Ali Mohammad Nani, who was killed in the same Israeli-American strikes.
Since February 28th, attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran have claimed the lives of several high-ranking political and military figures, striking at the core of the Islamic Republic’s leadership structures.
Several key figures within the Iranian government have been killed in recent weeks. Here’s a look at those confirmed deaths:
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader since 1989, who oversaw a tightening of the regime’s hostility towards the U.S. And Israel, was reportedly killed on February 28th in an American-Israeli airstrike in Tehran.
Ali Larijani, the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and a highly influential politician, was killed on March 17th in a U.S.-Israeli airstrike in the Pardis area of Tehran, along with his son and a deputy. He was 67 years old.
Ali Shamkhani, a close advisor to Khamenei and a key figure in shaping Iran’s security and nuclear policies, was killed in American-Israeli strikes on Tehran on February 28th.
Mohammad Pakpour, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) – Iran’s most powerful military force – was killed in the February 28th strikes in Tehran.
Aziz Nasirzadeh, Iran’s defense minister and a career officer in the air force, was killed in the same wave of strikes targeting top leadership in Tehran on February 28th.
Abdolrahim Mousavi, the chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces, was also killed on February 28th.
