The occasion highlights an Italian excellence that, according to available data, shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, the sector is experiencing rapid growth, mirroring the pace of a gelato cart on a hot summer day.

Italy’s artisanal gelato industry is a significant economic driver, currently valued at €4.9 billion (approximately $5.3 billion USD), according to data released by the Host 2027 Observatory. This figure encompasses raw materials, equipment, machinery, and display solutions. The sector’s strength is particularly evident in manufacturing, which accounts for €3.1 billion of the total value – a 60% increase since 2019 and an average growth rate of 8.1%.
The growth in the Italian gelato market is also fueling exports. Approximately €2.4 billion worth of products were exported in 2024, representing an 8.1% increase from the previous year. This success underscores the appeal of “Made in Italy” products globally, and positions the country as a leader in the premium frozen dessert market.
Italy leads Europe in artisanal gelato consumption, with over 600 million servings sold in 2024. This represents a 26.4% share of the continental market, surpassing Germany (25.1%) and Spain (20.6%), as reported on September 1, 2025. The sector supports approximately 120,000 jobs and generates €4.5 billion in revenue, demonstrating its substantial contribution to the Italian economy.
Between 2023 and 2024, gelato exports increased by 10.8%, exceeding €387 million. Germany, France, Spain, and the United States are key importers, accounting for the majority of the 100 million kilograms exported – a 19% increase over 2023. Ingredients and semi-finished products contribute €1.1 billion to the sector’s revenue, with 67% destined for export, while gelato machinery accounts for €670 million, up 3%.
The success of the Italian gelato industry is a testament to its commitment to quality ingredients and traditional production methods. The sector’s continued growth is expected to further strengthen Italy’s position as a global leader in the artisanal gelato market.
