A young couple died in a car accident late Saturday night in Montecorice, a town in the province of Salerno, Italy. The crash, which occurred in the Ripe Rosse area, has deeply affected the local community.
The victims, identified as Michele Pirozzi, 29, and Maria Magliocco, 24, both from Capaccio Paestum, were traveling in a Volkswagen Polo when it collided with a Citroën Jumper van. According to early reports, the Polo subsequently veered off the road, breaking through a guardrail and plunging approximately 200 meters down a steep cliff to the rocks below.
Emergency responders were alerted and launched a complex search and rescue operation involving the Coast Guard, firefighters – including divers and a specialized mountain rescue team – and Carabinieri police. The Volkswagen Polo was located by a Coast Guard patrol boat engaged in the search. The difficult terrain and darkness hampered efforts to reach the wreckage.
Both occupants were ejected from the vehicle during the fall and were pronounced dead at the scene. Recovery of the bodies proved challenging, requiring teams to work both from the sea and from above.
The driver of the van involved in the initial collision sustained minor injuries and received medical attention at the scene.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. The Carabinieri of Agropoli are currently gathering information to determine the cause of the crash. Family members and local residents gathered at the scene, with one relative even joining the sea search with a fishing boat. The tragedy underscores the vulnerability of drivers on winding coastal roads.
