Jadon Sancho is facing an uncertain future at Manchester United despite once catching the eye of Michael Carrick, who was impressed by the winger’s potential.

Sancho joined Manchester United in 2021 for a hefty fee of €85 million.

However, the England international has struggled to find consistent playing time, failing to fully adapt to the tactical approaches of successive managers. Sancho has been loaned out to three different clubs, most recently Aston Villa, where he will remain for the duration of the current season.

Sancho’s contract with Manchester United is set to expire in the summer of 2026, meaning he could become a free agent following his loan spell at Aston Villa.

Across 85 appearances for the Red Devils, Sancho has scored just 12 goals – a disappointing return given the significant investment made in his transfer.

Michael Carrick, who served as Manchester United’s interim manager, expressed sympathy for Sancho’s situation. Carrick acknowledged that Sancho possesses talent and the potential to become a world-class player.

“Sancho has got talent, that’s why the club signed him. He had some good moments, but after that I don’t know what happened given that I wasn’t here,” he said, as reported by BBC.

Carrick previously held roles as an assistant manager (2018-2021) and caretaker manager (2021) at Manchester United, giving him a firsthand look at Sancho’s capabilities.

Regarding the possibility of Manchester United extending Sancho’s contract, Carrick remained tight-lipped.

“What happens next, we just have to wait and see,” he stated.

“It’s natural for a player coming to a latest club to either succeed or not succeed,” he concluded.
