FC Porto’s pursuit of domestic cup glory hit a snag Tuesday as they drew Sporting CP in the semi-final round. Polish international Jan Bednarek featured in the starting lineup for the visitors, while compatriots Jakub Kiwior and Oskar Pietuszewski were named to the bench.

The match saw early drama for Bednarek, who was struck in the elbow by Sporting’s Luis Suarez, though the incident went unpunished by the referee with no card issued.

A more concerning moment arrived in the 40th minute when Bednarek was challenged by Suarez and Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa intervened.

Costa rushed off his line to claim the ball, but made unfortunate contact with Bednarek’s ribcage with his knee. The defender immediately went down clutching his side, requiring treatment from the club’s medical staff.

Bednarek ultimately left the pitch visibly in pain, holding his abdomen, and was substituted in the 44th minute by Kiwior.

Bednarek had been enjoying a strong run of form for FC Porto in recent weeks, making this injury a significant worry. The setback comes at a critical time with an important international window approaching for Poland. The national team is scheduled to face Albania on March 26 in a semi-final playoff match for a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
