Former News Icon Jan Hofer Reveals ‘Marriage Crisis’ Sparked by Secret Relocation Plans
Former Tagesschau anchor Jan Hofer is opening up about a period of marital tension that nearly shook his home on Mallorca. The 76-year-classic broadcasting legend admitted that a sudden desire to leave the island almost caused a major rift with his wife, Phong Lan.
After more than 35 years as the face of ARD’s flagship news program, Hofer eventually transitioned to RTL before entering full retirement at the end of 2022 to prioritize family time. While he and his wife moved to Mallorca permanently in 2024, the transition wasn’t without its hurdles. Hofer recently spoke openly about a marriage crisis triggered by his own restlessness.
The conflict began when Hofer considered trading the island life for the Spanish mainland. “I once caused a marriage crisis with my wife because I got the idea to flee the problems of this island a bit and move to the Spanish mainland,” Hofer explained, noting that You’ll see many stunning areas on the mainland. However, his proposal was met with fierce opposition from his partner. According to reports on his relocation plans, Phong Lan’s stance was absolute: “That is completely out of the question.”
The disagreement highlighted a fundamental difference in their visions for the future, as Phong Lan expressed a desire to remain on Mallorca for the rest of her life. The confession of this “marriage crisis” underscores the challenges of adjusting to retirement in a foreign country, even for a seasoned professional.
Hofer has abandoned the idea of moving. He now admits that he has “never felt as comfortable as here” on the island. The former news star has placed a high priority on integrating into Spanish society, noting that his son has developed Spanish friendships and he himself values his local acquaintances.
Despite the idyllic setting, Hofer has been candid about the financial realities of his golden years. In a recent update, he mentioned that his pension is “quite tight.” This transparency adds a human layer to the life of the man once known as “Mr. Tagesschau” on Mallorca, proving that even the most composed news anchors face domestic turbulence.
The resolution of the conflict marks a new chapter for the couple, as they continue to navigate their retirement together. While his initial move plans led to tension, the couple now seems aligned in their commitment to the Baleares.
