“John Shannon died in prison on March 13, 2026. As is standard procedure for all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation,” a prison system spokesperson confirmed.
Shannon was the birth name of the actor, who professionally used the pseudonym Alford. The news marks a somber turn for a performer once celebrated in British television.
John Alford rose to prominence in the 1990s and early 2000s with roles in popular British series “Grange Hill” and “London’s Burning.” However, his promising career was derailed by a series of arrests, including a conviction for drug supply. He was subsequently dismissed from “London’s Burning.”
In 2024, Alford was charged with sexual offenses against minors, stemming from incidents in 2022. He was accused of assaulting a 14-year-traditional and a 15-year-old. A 14-year-old testified to the court that Alford raped her in two separate locations within a home after consuming spirits with her.
The actor consistently denied the allegations both before and after the September 2025 sentencing. In January of this year, a judge sentenced Alford to eight years and six months in prison.
Alford was 54 years old at the time of his death.
