Jolin Tsai’s Concerts Fuel Fujian Tourism Boom

Pop superstar Jolin Tsai’s concerts in Xiamen, Fujian province, are driving a surge in local tourism and economic activity. The “PLEASURE” tour stopped at the Xiamen Olympic Sports Center’s Egret Stadium on March 14 and 15, drawing nearly 92,000 attendees over two nights, according to reports.

The concerts weren’t just a musical event; they sparked a broader cultural and economic boost for the region. The influx of fans led to extended subway hours, dedicated concert-goer train services, and a doubling of foot traffic in surrounding commercial areas, demonstrating the power of “concertnomics” to revitalize urban centers. This trend highlights the growing importance of live entertainment as an economic driver.

Tsai’s performances, featuring reimagined versions of over 30 of her hit songs, transformed the Egret Stadium into a vibrant spectacle of light and sound. The venue, inspired by the image of soaring egrets, provided a stunning backdrop for the show. Tickets were available through platforms like Damai and Maoyan.

Beyond Tsai’s concert, Fujian province is hosting a variety of cultural events this week, including performances by the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Broadway musical LIZZIE, and a show by singer Teresa Teng. The province is aiming to establish itself as a hub for arts and culture, offering a diverse range of entertainment options.

The concerts come after reports of alterations made to Tsai’s performances in mainland China, sparking frustration among some fans who threatened to request refunds. The changes reportedly involved the removal of a mechanical snake prop from the show, leading to speculation about potential censorship. Despite this, the Xiamen concerts proved to be a major success, attracting a large audience and generating significant economic benefits for the region.

Tsai launched her “PLEASURE” tour in Shenzhen earlier this year, captivating audiences with a performance described as an immersive journey of self-discovery. The tour continues to build momentum as one of the most anticipated concert events of the year.
