Understanding the Patient Experience: The Realities of Hair Transplant Anesthesia and Recovery
Hair restoration surgery is becoming increasingly common, but the physical experience during the procedure can vary significantly between patients. A recent account of a transplant involving 4,000 follicles highlights a critical, often overlooked aspect of the process: the intensity of the local anesthesia.
For some, the initial numbing phase can be a significant source of distress. One patient described the experience as involving dozens of successive injections into the scalp, which caused intense pain. The physical reaction was severe enough to cause involuntary leg movements and audible expressions of distress. This underscores the importance of psychological preparation and managing expectations regarding pain tolerance during the preparatory stages of the surgery.
Though, these experiences are not universal. Another individual who underwent the procedure in late 2024 reported feeling no pain during the anesthesia phase. This disparity suggests that sensitivity to the anesthetic liquid and the injection process can differ greatly from person to person.
The procedure itself varies based on the chosen technique. One common approach involves shaving the head, as seen in a surgery that lasted between six and seven hours—beginning around 9:30 a.m. And concluding near 4:00 p.m. In this method, the back of the head and the nape serve as the donor area. Alternatively, some patients opt for techniques that preserve existing hair, removing the need to shave the scalp entirely.
Public figures have also utilized these services to manage hair loss. For example, BBB presenter Tadeu Schmidt underwent a transplant in late 2024. Others, such as samba artist Diogo Nogueira, have undergone secondary procedures when the initial results did not meet expectations. Political figure Ronaldo Caiado opted for a non-shaving technique.
While the anesthesia phase can be challenging—lasting approximately half an hour in some cases—the goal of these procedures is a long-term aesthetic solution for hair loss. Understanding the full spectrum of the surgical experience, from the initial injections to the recovery of the donor area, helps patients make more informed decisions about their wellness and cosmetic health.
