Speed skater Kjeld Nuis is receiving an outpouring of support from his partner, Joy Beune, after facing harsh criticism online following his performance at a recent competition.
Beune took to social media to address the intense negativity directed at Nuis, stating, “I feel compelled to say something about this. The hateful messages Kjeld is receiving are harsh and painful to read.” She emphasized the real-world impact of online comments, adding, “People often don’t realize the negative impact their messages have. Words aren’t just words. Behind this account is a person, with feelings and people who love him.”
Beune made it clear that disagreement is acceptable, but the current level of reaction is unacceptable. “Don’t wish someone pain or death. That really crosses a line,” she wrote.

She concluded with a message of encouragement, saying, “I am proud of Kjeld and how he continues to follow his own path. Let’s all be a little kinder to each other.”
Nuis finished fourth in the 1500-meter race on Tuesday, a result that initially appeared to jeopardize his chances of qualifying for the Olympics. However, the Royal Dutch Skating Federation (KNSB) has since confirmed that he will still be allowed to compete in the event. The 1500m is a key event for Olympic hopefuls, and Nuis’s continued participation keeps his dreams alive.
The couple’s strong bond is further demonstrated by a tattoo Nuis has of Beune’s face. A video showcasing Beune’s reaction to the tattoo is available below.
