A U.S. Trial has begun for Venezuelan opposition leader Julio Borges, stemming from allegations of receiving $15 million from the Venezuelan state-owned oil company Citgo, according to Alejandro Terán, director of the Latin American Petroleum Association of Texas.
The proceedings commenced on Monday, March 23, in Texas, and center around accusations that Borges benefited financially from Citgo assets while serving in the self-proclaimed interim government of Juan Guaidó. The revelation came during an appearance on the podcast «Aquí y Ahora» with journalist Julio Riobó, where Terán explained that the investigation focuses on a federal case against the Venezuelan politician.
“Yesterday was the first day of the trial where Citgo delivered $15 million to Julio Borges. He is currently under investigation, but this hasn’t been reported in the U.S. Media,” Terán stated.
The case highlights concerns over the handling of Venezuelan assets abroad and the alleged misappropriation of funds during the period when Guaidó was recognized by some countries as the legitimate leader of Venezuela. Borges was a key figure in that interim government, which has been accused of mismanaging billions of dollars in Citgo holdings, with no individuals having yet faced justice in the United States for these alleged actions.
The development underscores the ongoing legal and political battles surrounding Venezuela’s assets held in foreign countries and the potential for further scrutiny of individuals involved in the previous political administration.
