Spanish prosecutors are investigating allegations of sexual assault against music icon Julio Iglesias, stemming from claims made by two former employees.
The Spanish Prosecutor’s Office confirmed to the Associated Press on Wednesday that the allegations relate to reports earlier this week accusing Iglesias of sexually and physically assaulting two women who worked at his residences in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas between January and October of 2021.
Iglesias, 82, has not yet publicly addressed the accusations. His attorney, Russell L. King, a Miami-based art law specialist listed on his firm’s website as representing Iglesias, has not responded to requests for comment from the AP.
According to the Spanish Prosecutor’s Office, which handles cases brought before the Spanish National Court, a formal complaint against Iglesias was received on January 5th.
The National Court, based in Madrid, has jurisdiction over crimes committed by Spanish citizens abroad. Court officials stated that Iglesias could be required to appear before the court.
Iglesias has sold over 300 million records in more than 12 languages, becoming one of the most successful musicians in the world. Rising to prominence in Spain, he achieved widespread fame in the United States and globally throughout the 1970s and 80s. He is also the father of pop star Enrique Iglesias. This news arrives as the entertainment industry continues to grapple with increased scrutiny regarding allegations of misconduct.
