Poland has secured its first medal of the 2026 Winter Olympics, with 19-year-old Kacper Tomasiak claiming silver in the ski jumping event in Milan-Cortina. Tomasiak soared to distances of 103 and 107 meters, with his final jump setting a novel record for the competition. He was bested only by Philipp Raimund, though the Polish jumper achieved greater distances overall.

The performance marks a significant debut for Tomasiak, who had never reached a World Cup podium before. The result is a major breakthrough for the young athlete and a promising start for Poland in the ski jumping competition.

The day wasn’t as successful for veteran Kamil Stoch, who failed to advance to the final round, losing out to competitors including China’s Qiwu Song and Slovakia’s Hector Kapustik. Despite his own struggles, the 38-year-old remained to cheer on Tomasiak as he competed for a medal.

Adam Małysz and Kamil Stoch React to Kacper Tomasiak’s Medal

A touching moment unfolded as Adam Małysz and Kamil Stoch watched Tomasiak’s medal ceremony together. Małysz had earlier relinquished his accreditation after the Polish Ski Association was unable to secure enough credentials through the Polish Olympic Committee, ultimately choosing to free up a spot for another member of the Polish team.

TVP Sport captured footage of Małysz and Stoch alongside Maciej Maciusiak, all intently watching the ceremony.

“We celebrated Małysz’s medals. We celebrated Stoch’s medals. WE ARE CELEBRATING TOMASIAK’S MEDAL! We and our two great champions, who reacted like this to the success of the younger colleague,” TVP Sport posted on social media alongside the historic recording.

Despite his own disappointing result, Stoch appeared genuinely pleased for the 19-year-old. According to Natalia Żaczek of Przegląd Sportowy Onet, Stoch appeared composed in the mixed zone after the event.
