Kaunas Roads Damaged: Sinkholes & Potholes After Winter

Residents of Kaunas, Lithuania, are reporting significant road damage following the winter season, raising concerns about safety and infrastructure maintenance. The issues range from a potentially collapsing section of roadway to newly formed potholes on recently reconstructed streets.

One resident contacted local news outlet Kas vyksta Kaune to report a dangerous sinkhole developing on S. Lozoraitis Street, between numbers 16 and 20. The resident expressed fear that the entire road could collapse, noting that the damage is difficult to observe and poses a hazard to drivers. “When driving, the car even bounces because the sinkhole isn’t visible from a distance,” the resident said.

The resident stated that a report was filed with the city’s sanitation department, “Kauno švara,” a week prior, but no action had been taken. This situation underscores the challenges cities face in maintaining infrastructure after harsh winter weather.

Another resident reported damage to the recently reconstructed Regitros Hill road, with potholes appearing after the winter season. “If the situation is like this after one serious winter, then after two more winters there will be reconstruction of the entire hill again,” the resident said.

According to a statement provided to Kas vyksta Kaune, “Kauno švara” confirmed that Romainių Hill is still under warranty. “the condition of this area is first assessed in the context of warranty obligations,” a company spokesperson said.

The company also stated that it prioritizes repairs on main city streets, and S. Lozoraitis Street will be addressed according to the work schedule.

“Kauno švara” reported receiving approximately 20 reports of potholes since March 1, with an increase in reports beginning at the end of February. “We constantly monitor the condition of city roads and identify problematic areas without waiting for residents’ reports. We also constantly exchange information with the city municipality. Pothole repair work is planned and carried out daily,” the spokesperson said.

The company noted that it does not repair potholes in residential driveways, on highways, in Kaunas district, on private roads, or on unpaved roads.

Difficult Road Conditions After Winter

Kas vyksta Kaune notes that the particularly cold winter has caused rapid deterioration of road surfaces, with challenging conditions in some areas. Damage to the A1 highway, a major route in the country, was also reported this week.

Residents can report potholes to “Kauno švara” by emailing [email protected] or by calling +370 681 99721 during business hours, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
