Kazik Staszewski Considered Joining Jehovah’s Witnesses: “I Studied Scripture”

Polish musician Kazik Staszewski revealed in a 2018 appearance on the program “Chuligan Literacki” that he found solace in meetings with Jehovah’s Witnesses during a turbulent period in the 1970s and 80s. The artist explained:

Kazik Staszewski did not grow a Jehovah’s Witness because he didn’t want to choose between dedicating himself to the faith and his lifelong passion for music. “I just loved what I did in my free time” he added in the interview. In a 2014 conversation with “Zwierciadło” magazine, he also spoke about finding God in his life, stating:

Kazik Staszewski, the frontman of the influential Polish rock band Kult, recently discussed a surprising chapter from his past: a period of engagement with the Jehovah’s Witnesses. The revelation comes amid ongoing public discourse and adds another layer to the artist’s complex public persona. Staszewski shared his experience during an appearance on the “Chuligan Literacki” program in 2018, explaining that the group offered him a sense of hope during the chaotic era of martial law in Poland. He described studying scripture and attending meetings with the community. “I was creating a huge mix at that time. Because in the times of punk rock and new wave, I was saturated with rebellion, such an anti-systemic, but also aesthetic one. Exactly a week after the introduction of martial law, I came into contact with Jehovah’s Witnesses and my adventure with them lasted until about 85/86. I studied the Bible and went to meetings,” Staszewski said. Despite his deep involvement, Staszewski ultimately chose not to fully commit to the faith. He explained that his dedication to music proved too strong. “It didn’t allow me to take that final step, that is, to get baptized and officially become a Jehovah’s Witness, because I loved too much what I did in my free time,” he stated. The artist also revealed in a 2014 interview with “Zwierciadło” magazine that he had “found God” in his life, suggesting a continuing spiritual exploration alongside his artistic pursuits. This disclosure offers a glimpse into the personal beliefs of a prominent figure in Polish rock and roll.
