Rescuers Recover Person After Avalanche Near Kebnekaise in Sweden

A person has been found following an avalanche near Kebnekaise, Sweden’s highest mountain, on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The incident prompted a rescue operation in the remote Arctic region, highlighting the dangers of backcountry travel during winter months.

According to early reports, emergency services were alerted to the avalanche and initiated a search. Details surrounding the circumstances of the avalanche and the condition of the individual recovered remain limited.

The recovery occurred in the area of Kebnekaise, a mountain in Swedish Lapland approximately 93 miles north of the Arctic Circle and west of Kiruna, near the popular Kungsleden hiking trail. Kebnekaise, whose name comes from the Sami languages meaning “cauldron crest,” is comprised of two main peaks. The southern peak, once the highest, has shrunk by 24 meters in the last 50 years due to glacial melt, making the northern peak the highest at 2,096.8 meters (6,879 feet).

Communication with the rescue team was temporarily disrupted, raising concerns about the operation’s progress, but was later re-established. Authorities have not yet released information regarding the identity of the individual or the extent of any injuries sustained.

The Swedish Tourist Association notes that climbing Kebnekaise requires proper equipment, physical stamina and knowledge of alpine conditions, regardless of the route or time of year. The mountain offers both western and eastern routes, with the eastern route being more technically demanding and often requiring a guide.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
