Kendry Páez: Chelsea Considers Ending Loan Amid Lack of Playing Time

Concerns are mounting over the development of young Ecuadorian midfielder Kendry Páez, currently on loan at Racing Strasbourg from Chelsea. Despite being touted as a potential star, limited playing time in Ligue 1 has reportedly prompted Chelsea to consider cutting the loan short in January[1]. The Blues are seeking consistent first-team football for the 17-year-old[2], with several clubs-including Watford, Borussia Dortmund, adn Brighton-emerging as potential destinations[1].

The immediate future of Kendry Páez in European football is once again under scrutiny. Despite the Ecuadorian midfielder’s first year with Racing Strasbourg, a lack of consistent playing time has reportedly caused concern at Chelsea, the club that owns his sporting rights.

Chelsea initially sent the promising young talent to Ligue 1 with the expectation that he would gain valuable minutes and maintain consistent match fitness. Páez, who has a contract with Chelsea through 2030, is seen as a key piece of the future, and consistent development is paramount.

However, the reality hasn’t matched those expectations. Through all competitions this season, Páez has made fourteen appearances totaling 531 minutes on the pitch. But his role has diminished recently, seeing less than 20 minutes in each of the last four matches and a complete absence from the lineup in the recent defeat against Lens.

French outlet Onze reports that this situation has led Chelsea to seriously consider interrupting his loan deal in January. The Blues are looking to ensure Páez is playing regularly to continue his development.

According to the same sources, the London club intends to place the player with another organization where he can compete for consistent playing time. Potential destinations include Watford, Borussia Dortmund, and Brighton, all clubs with established loan relationships with Chelsea.

Despite the challenges, Páez has shown flashes of brilliance since arriving in French football, including a nomination for the league’s Young Player of the Month award in September and a goal against Paris FC. However, securing a consistent starting role remains elusive in a team focused on developing young talent, particularly from South America.

The situation is creating tension within the BlueCo Group, the ownership conglomerate of both Chelsea and Racing, which had envisioned a more stable path for the Ecuadorian player. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, and the need to maintain match sharpness, a move could be on the cards for Páez in the near future.

Páez is under contract with Chelsea until 2030, meaning any decision will be made with his long-term development in mind. Should the loan be terminated in January, the English club doesn’t plan to add him to their first team, but rather find him a new environment where he can consistently accumulate minutes. (D)
