The governor of Kirkuk, Rebwar Taha, personally intervened on Sunday, February 22, 2026, to restore a Kurdish family to their home after they were forcibly evicted by the Iraqi army. The incident highlights ongoing tensions over property rights in the region and raises questions about the conduct of Iraqi security forces.

The Iraqi army took control of several homes in Kirkuk’s Newroz neighborhood earlier on Sunday, citing a claim that the land was state property, and evicted the families residing there. Governor Taha visited the area following the evictions.

After entering the home of the evicted Kurdish family, Taha oversaw their return. “I have brought the family back to their home. The Iraqi army must absolutely leave this area, and I will personally oversee the administration of these homes,” he stated.

“An investigation will be opened against officers who disrespect the public”

Taha also addressed allegations of mistreatment and insults leveled against residents during the eviction process, criticizing the actions of some within the army.

“An investigation will be launched against every officer who insulted or disrespected the public. We know that some officers within the army have their eyes on these properties,” Taha said.

“The property issue exists throughout Iraq”

Although acknowledging that the deeds to the properties in question are held by the state, Rebwar Taha noted that disputes over land and property between the army and various ministries are not unique to Kirkuk, but are a widespread issue across many Iraqi provinces.

The early morning raid by the Iraqi army on the Newroz neighborhood sparked tensions, as Kurdish families were unexpectedly removed from their homes.
