Kristen Bell is joining the voice cast of Sonic the Hedgehog, landing the role of Amy Rose in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
The news confirms Bell’s deal to voice the character in the latest installment of the hit movie franchise based on the Sega video games. The casting announcement comes as the Sonic the Hedgehog films continue to be a major success for Paramount Pictures.
Bell joins a star-studded voice cast that includes Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Idris Elba as Knuckles (first appearing in Sonic 2) and Keanu Reeves as Shadow, introduced in Sonic 3. The franchise has become known for attracting high-profile talent with each new film.
Jim Carrey will reprise his role as the villainous Dr. Robotnik, alongside Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter are as well expected to return as Sonic’s adoptive parents.
Jeff Fowler is back to direct, having helmed the previous three films. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara will return as producers.
Paramount has set a March 19, 2027 release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The franchise has already exceeded $1 billion at the global box office, with the most recent film earning over $490 million worldwide.
Specific plot details remain under wraps, but Amy Rose, a pink hedgehog and a longtime admirer of Sonic, will play a key role.
The character was teased in the mid-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where Sonic was saved from an army of Metal Sonics by Rose.
Ben Schwartz shared the news on Instagram, posting a photo of himself with Bell and their respective characters.
Bell, who currently stars in and executive produces the Netflix comedy series Nobody Wants This, is no stranger to voice work. She famously voiced Anna in Disney’s Frozen franchise, a role that earned her Disney Legend status and will see her reprise the character in two upcoming films.
She is also set to return as Joanne in season three of Nobody Wants This and will appear as Mrs. Claus opposite David Harbour’s Santa Claus in Universal’s upcoming action comedy Violent Night 2.
Bell is represented by CAA and Schreck Rose. She will also host the SAG-AFTRA Actors Awards on March 1.
