A legendary figure in Egyptian cinema has passed away. Dancer Keti Fotsaki, known affectionately as “The She-Devil of Ismail Yassin” for her role alongside the iconic comedian, died Friday at the age of 96. The news was reported by Al-Masry Al-Youm and Sayidaty.

Fotsaki passed away at her home in Athens, Greece. Born on April 21, 1927, in Alexandria, Egypt, to a Greek family, she became a prominent figure in the golden age of Egyptian cinema during the 1940s and 50s. She reportedly embraced Judaism at some point in her life.

The celebrated performer appeared in nearly 60 films in under two decades, with her role in “The She-Devil of Ismail Yassin” remaining one of her most memorable performances. She captivated audiences with her talent for belly dancing, honing her skills on the streets of Egypt and bringing a unique flair to her performances.

After a prolific career, Fotsaki suddenly disappeared from the public eye, with rumors of her death circulating as early as 1980. Her last film appearance was in “Al-Aql wal-Mal” (The Mind and the Money) in 1965, alongside Ismail Yassin, Hassan Fayed, Tofik El-Dokn, Madiha Kamal, and others. Filfan.com reports that she spent her later years quietly with her grandchildren in Athens.

The news of her passing was confirmed by Dr. Manolis Tasoulas, a Greek physician and writer who was a close friend in her final years. Fotsaki’s legacy as a pioneering dancer and actress will continue to be celebrated by fans of Egyptian cinema for generations to come.

Prior to her film career, Fotsaki performed with Badia Masabni and Baba Ezzedine at the famed Casino Opera. She likewise spent ten years performing at the Kazino Shahrazad theater in Cairo.
