Kjeld Nuis is feeling the pressure mount as he prepares for what will be his final Olympic race on the 1500m, at the Milan Games. The 36-year-traditional, a two-time Olympic champion in the event, is determined to savor “the last time” while still aiming for a medal. “Tomorrow I need to be sharp, but I will enjoy the crowd as I step onto the ice and I hope to give it everything I have,” he said.
Nuis previously competed in the 1000m in Milan, finishing sixth. “Then I knew the 1500m was still to come, and it was easy to put that pressure aside. Now I only have one Olympic race left. That’s difficult,” he admitted.
The speed skater revealed he became emotional while attempting to post about his Olympic memories on social media. “I don’t usually act like that, well, maybe I do,” he chuckled, correcting himself. “But I wouldn’t cry over something I wrote myself. Now I really realized, this is truly my last one.”
