Family of Czech Director Jiří Menzel Criticizes Politician’s Employ of Film Clip
The family of the late Czech film director Jiří Menzel has publicly criticized politician Jan Rajchl for using a scene from Menzel’s beloved 1996 comedy, Pelíšky (Cosy Dens), in a recent political campaign. The use of the clip has sparked outrage in the Czech Republic, with many seeing it as disrespectful to Menzel’s legacy.
Bára Kodetová, Menzel’s daughter, expressed her anger, stating that the clip had been “abused and tarnished” the legacy of her father. According to reports, Kodetová and other family members believe Rajchl’s use of the film was inappropriate and misrepresented Menzel’s values.
“Don’t take our father’s name in your mouth, he was a democrat and a decent man,” the family stated in a discussion forum, further emphasizing their disapproval. The family’s statement underscores the importance of respecting the artistic integrity and political views of cultural figures.
The controversy stems from Rajchl’s use of a scene from Pelíšky in his campaign materials. Super.cz reported that the director of the film, Jan Hřebejk, was as well upset by the use of the clip. Even a former child star from the film weighed in on the situation.
Kodetová further voiced her concerns, stating, “Rajchl abused the legacy of my famous father!” The incident highlights a growing debate about the use of artistic works in political campaigns and the ethical considerations involved. The film, a cultural touchstone in the Czech Republic, remains popular with audiences today.
