A January 1st altercation at a family health center in Konya, Turkey, has ignited a debate over the safety of healthcare workers amid conflicting accounts from a doctor and a local religious official. Dr. Ahmet Tolu reported being physically assaulted by a muezzin, Yusuf Mete, who claims self-defense following a dispute over an appointment and prescription request. With investigations underway by both the prosecutor’s office and health directorate, the incident highlights a concerning pattern of violence against medical staff in Turkey, prompting calls for increased protections.

A dispute at a family health center in Konya, Turkey, has sparked renewed debate over violence against healthcare workers. The incident involves a doctor alleging a physical assault and a local muezzin claiming he was the initial aggressor, leading to a police investigation and legal proceedings.

ALLEGED ASSAULT AT HEALTH CENTER

The incident occurred January 1, at the 61st Martyr Ufuk Başarı Family Health Center in Konya’s Selçuklu district. Dr. Ahmet Tolu, a family physician, reported being physically attacked by an individual and filed a complaint with police and prosecutors. Medical examinations revealed a tear in Dr. Tolu’s eardrum and bruising around his eyes. Following the incident, a “White Code” – a protocol for violent incidents – was activated at the health center, and a formal investigation began.

Yusuf Mete, a muezzin, was detained in connection with the alleged assault and brought before a court. While he was initially released under judicial control, prosecutors are expected to appeal that decision, according to reports.

MUEZZIN CLAIMS SELF-DEFENSE

Mete maintains he went to the health center with a scheduled appointment at 11:40 a.m. He stated that Dr. Tolu was on leave and he was waiting to see the doctor covering for him. “My name didn’t appear on the screen, so I waited my turn,” he said.

Mete alleges that the doctor was confrontational upon his entering the examination room. “He told me, ‘I’m the boss here.’ He said he wouldn’t write my prescription and insulted me,” Mete claimed.

As the argument escalated, Mete asserts that Dr. Tolu initiated the physical altercation. “He picked up a porcelain vase from the desk and was about to hit me with it. I instinctively raised my hand. Then he grabbed my collar and started punching me. I defended myself. My intention wasn’t to attack anyone, it was self-defense,” he stated.

Mete also reported sustaining injuries, including a nosebleed and difficulty using his left arm, and obtained his own medical report documenting the alleged assault.

DIVERGING ACCOUNTS AND SUPPORT FOR THE MUEZZIN

Ali Koç, head of the Konya branch of Diyanet-Sen, a religious affairs union, released a statement indicating that their investigation suggests Mete was the victim in the incident. “During the altercation, we learned that the initial physical action was taken by the doctor. Our colleague’s intention was never to attack a healthcare worker. This is an individual incident,” Koç said. “We also condemn violence against healthcare workers.”

CONCERNS OVER RISING VIOLENCE AGAINST HEALTHCARE WORKERS

The Konya Family Physicians Association (KonAHED) issued a statement highlighting the increasing trend of violence against healthcare professionals. The association called for the implementation of stricter legal measures to deter such attacks and protect medical staff. KonAHED’s board expressed support for Dr. Tolu and pledged to closely monitor the case.

ONGOING INVESTIGATION

Both the prosecutor’s office and the Konya Provincial Health Directorate have launched investigations into the incident, examining the conflicting claims of assault. The case underscores the growing concerns about safety and security for healthcare workers in Turkey.
