Seoul, South Korea – South Korea and Finland are strengthening their collaboration in key technology sectors, including quantum computing, 6G telecommunications and artificial intelligence, with an eye toward establishing global standards and bolstering digital security. The partnership was discussed during a meeting between South Korean Vice Minister of Science and ICT, Gu Hyeok-chae, and Antti Vasara, Finland’s Technology Envoy, on March 13, 2026.
The meeting, held at the National Science and Technology Advisory Council in Seoul, focused on expanding cooperation in what both nations see as “future game-changer technologies.” Finland’s initiative to deepen ties stems from its recognition of South Korea’s leading capabilities in ICT manufacturing, and commercialization. This collaboration aims to combine Finland’s strength in foundational technologies with South Korea’s manufacturing prowess.
“Quantum, 6G, and cybersecurity are key strategic technologies for digital dominance in the future,” Gu Hyeok-chae stated, emphasizing the importance of a balanced approach to these critical areas. “We hope to design the most secure and intelligent future network by combining Korea’s manufacturing and operational capabilities with Finland’s foundational technology and security philosophy.”
Vasara echoed this sentiment, noting that South Korea is a “core technology partner” for Finland, with ongoing exchanges already taking place in the quantum and 6G fields. He as well proposed collaboration on an upcoming quantum information technology international standards meeting, scheduled to be held in Finland in May, suggesting a joint effort to lead global technology standards.
Further solidifying the partnership, Gu Hyeok-chae formally invited Finnish representatives from academia, industry, and research institutions to the ‘6G Vision Fest’ in Seoul this December. This invitation underscores a commitment to joint leadership in next-generation communication technologies. The move highlights the growing importance of international cooperation in shaping the future of technology.
The Chungbuk Science and Technology Innovation Institute is also playing a role in strengthening the “quantum alliance” with Finland, recently hosting a forum to discuss strategies for future quantum technologies.
