Kim Young-rae is set to continue as interim head coach of the Korea Expressway Corporation women’s volleyball team, as they prepare for the championship series against GS Caltex.

The team is navigating a challenging period following the departure of former head coach Kim Jong-min. According to reports, the players were significantly impacted by the news of the coaching change. Kim Young-rae, who stepped into the interim role, revealed that training sessions were adjusted to minimize the risk of injury due to the emotional strain on the team. “After the news about the director (Kim Jong-min) came out, the players were having a hard time,” he said. “I removed training that could risk injury, fearing it would affect the players and cause them to get hurt.”

The decision not to renew Kim Jong-min’s contract, despite leading the team to a first-place regular season finish, has been described as unusual. Despite the disruption, Kim Jong-min continues to offer guidance to the coaching staff. Kim Young-rae shared that he has been in frequent communication with the former coach, seeking advice on training and game strategy. “I reported everything to the director (Kim Jong-min) during our phone calls, and he gave me a lot of advice,” he stated.

Kim Young-rae also disclosed a personal toll from the situation, revealing he lost 6 kilograms (approximately 13 pounds) due to the stress. The coaching staff has also been struggling to cope with the unexpected transition. “The coaches haven’t been able to sleep or eat well since the incident,” he added.

The Expressway Corporation will face GS Caltex in the first game of the best-of-five championship series on April 1 at Gimcheon Indoor Gymnasium. The team is focused on a strong start, believing a successful first set will be crucial for momentum. The championship series represents a significant opportunity for the Expressway Corporation, aiming for their third overall title and first since 2018. GS Caltex, having upset both the second and third-place teams in the playoffs, will look to continue their momentum and claim an unexpected championship title.

GS Caltex has been on a strong run, achieving a “spring volleyball” winning streak as they head into the championship. The team’s success is fueled by strong performances from key players, setting the stage for a competitive showdown.
