South Korean Medical Device Exports Surge, Driven by Trade Show Success
South Korea’s medical device industry is experiencing significant growth, with exports exceeding $6 billion USD, bolstered by a highly successful trade show that attracted a record number of international buyers. The Korea International Medical & Hospital Equipment Show (KIMES) and associated business consultations, known collectively as GMEP (Global Medical Equipment Plaza), played a key role in securing approximately 60 billion Korean won (roughly $46 million USD) in export contracts, according to recent reports.
The event, organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and KOTRA (Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency), hosted 176 companies from 50 countries – the largest international participation in the show’s history. This surge in interest underscores the growing global demand for Korean medical technology and healthcare solutions. The strong showing at GMEP highlights South Korea’s increasing competitiveness in the global medical device market.
KOTRA hosted GMEP from March 20 to March 21, 2026, alongside the International Medical & Hospital Equipment Exhibition. The event featured one-on-one business consultations, contract signing ceremonies, showcases of innovative medical devices, and export consulting services through the K-Bio Desk. Details of the event indicate a focus on fostering global open innovation partnerships and sharing collaborative opportunities with major international corporations.
The success of GMEP comes as the Korean healthcare sector increasingly integrates information technology (IT) to develop advanced healthcare solutions. This convergence of IT and medical technology is positioning Korean companies to capture a larger share of the global medical device market, according to industry analysts. Artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are also playing an increasingly prominent role in the Korean medical device market, driving innovation and efficiency.
The export success demonstrates the effectiveness of KOTRA’s efforts to support the growth of the Korean medical device industry on the global stage. Recent data shows that K-medical device exports have surpassed $6 billion USD, signaling a positive trajectory for the sector.
