Logroño, Spain – Respiratory illness trends in La Rioja, Spain, are showing signs of stabilization, with influenza cases remaining steady and the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) declining, according to recent reports. The updates come as the region remains in an epidemic phase for acute respiratory infections, but with encouraging indicators of easing strain on healthcare systems.

As of February 10, 2026, We find 10 people hospitalized with influenza, 12 with RSV, and no patients hospitalized with COVID-19, a decrease from the previous week. This reduction in hospitalizations is a positive sign, according to health officials.

“The most positive thing is that hospital admissions have decreased and, as of today, there are no people hospitalized for COVID,” said Eva Martínez, Director General of Public Health. “Vaccination continues to advance with more than 89,000 doses of influenza administered and coverage exceeding 70% in people over 65 years of age.”

Although the overall incidence remains similar to the previous week, influenza cases have seen a slight increase, rising from 32 to 36 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. RSV, however, continues to decrease, and no new cases of COVID-19 have been reported. These trends suggest a potential easing of the winter respiratory illness season, though vigilance remains crucial.

“La Rioja continues to be in an epidemic phase for acute respiratory infections, although the situation remains stable,” Martínez stated. “This week, a slight increase in the incidence of acute respiratory infections is observed, similar to the previous week, while influenza remains stable and the respiratory syncytial virus continues to decline.”

Earlier in January, the region experienced a surge in RSV cases, leading to increased hospitalizations. The overall incidence of acute respiratory infections reached 857.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, with a particularly significant impact on children under 4 years old.

Health authorities continue to emphasize the importance of vaccination and protective measures, particularly for vulnerable populations. As of November 24, 2025, hospitals in La Rioja had 3 patients admitted for COVID-19, 7 for influenza, and 2 for RSV.

The current situation underscores the ongoing challenges of managing respiratory infections and the importance of continued public health efforts to protect communities. The stabilization of these trends could inform future public health strategies and resource allocation.
