Laporta, who recently stepped down from his position to pursue a novel term, details how he navigated a precarious financial situation requiring innovative solutions. Spanish newspaper Marca obtained a copy of the book from publishing sources and outlined key points.
Among the most challenging issues Laporta faced – and continues to be – was Messi’s departure. “When renewal negotiations came around, we were facing a team that required a lot,” he wrote. “Whereas Messi’s father was more understanding, the player’s inner circle gave a different impression.”

Laporta explained they devised a “crazy” solution: a long-term contract starting with a period of play at Barcelona followed by a loan to a club in Major League Soccer. This was intended as a workaround to La Liga regulations, but the league rejected the idea, informing them they would need to sign an agreement to sell a percentage of television broadcasting rights for fifty years through a fund called “CVC.”
There was a possibility for Messi to return after his stint with Paris Saint-Germain. Jorge Messi, Lionel’s father, visited Laporta’s home, and a contract was prepared and sent as a draft, but it received no response.
“A week went by, then two, eventually a month,” Laporta wrote, “and finally he came to my house to tell me that they had decided Messi would go to Inter Miami, where he wouldn’t be under so much pressure.”
Messi’s move to Inter Miami marked a significant shift in his career, bringing the global icon to American soccer and offering a new chapter away from the intense scrutiny of European football. The decision ended months of speculation about his future and ultimately saw him join a growing list of international stars in MLS.
