Several municipalities, government agencies, and state-owned companies in Latvia are projected to fall short of their European Regional Development Fund (ERAF) funding goals from last year by approximately €1.2 million, according to the Ministry of Interior (IeM). The shortfall underscores the challenges of effectively distributing and utilizing EU funds for planned projects.
To ensure the funds are fully allocated, the IeM plans to update the list of facilities intended for shelter adaptation and equipment upgrades and will propose a redistribution of the ERAF funding. The move aims to maximize the impact of the available resources and prevent funds from going unused.
A second call for project proposals is scheduled to be announced in the second quarter of this year. This will provide additional opportunities for organizations to apply for ERAF funding and implement projects aligned with the fund’s objectives. The ERAF supports less developed regions by strengthening public infrastructure and promoting entrepreneurship, as detailed on the IeM website.
The European Regional Development Fund aims to reduce regional disparities within the European Union, with a focus on improving public infrastructure and fostering business growth, according to ES fondi. The 2021-2027 planning period prioritizes areas such as a smarter and greener Europe, a more closely connected Europe, and a more social and inclusive Europe.
The Ministry of Interior is one of the responsible institutions administering the ERAF 2021-2027 planning period in Latvia. Further details regarding ERAF activities within the interior ministry can be found here. The Finance Ministry is also involved in the implementation of ERAF projects.
