Road conditions across Latvia are deteriorating rapidly due to thawing temperatures and recent precipitation, causing travel disruptions in several regions. The spring thaw is creating particularly challenging conditions on unpaved roads, with some areas becoming impassable.

In the Ludza region, roads are becoming unusable due to the softening ground, according to reports. The Ludza Municipality announced that a meeting of the Ludza Pensioners’ Association “There is No Age for Participation” will be held on March 26, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. In the hall of the Ludza Children and Youth Center (Tirgus iela 22, Ludza). The agenda includes a review of the board’s activities for 2025, a report from the auditor, discussion of the 2026 work plan, and various questions.

Similar issues are impacting travel in the Jēkabpils region, where thawing conditions and weight restrictions are hindering economic activity. In the Talsi region, transport mass restrictions have been imposed on roads in the Laidze and Vandzene parishes.

The situation is also affecting traffic in parts of Latgale, where slush on gravel roads is causing localized paralysis. Authorities in Valkas novads are taking steps to improve road safety by installing new road signs. The Valkas novada pašvaldība is also conducting a survey to gather feedback from residents on the accessibility and quality of municipal services in 2025, as well as their views on past achievements and future priorities.

Latvia underwent administrative-territorial reform in 2021, creating the Ludzas novads by merging Ludzas novads, Ciblas novads, Kārsavas novads, and Zilupes novads. The new municipality borders Balvu novads to the north, Rēzeknes novads to the west, Krāslavas novads to the south, and Russia’s Pleskov Oblast to the east. As of 2025, the population of Ludzas novads is 20,336.

Latgale is currently celebrating “Latgales Garšu Mēnesis” (Latgale Taste Month) throughout March, offering special deals on traditional and modern cuisine.

Ludza novada skolēni (students) are participating in the international robotics competition “Robotiada 2026,” and there are ongoing initiatives related to adult education and cancer screening.
