Latvia is bracing for a prolonged period of sub-freezing temperatures, with forecasters predicting a substantially colder-than-average remainder of January. The forecast comes as much of the country experiences cloudy conditions and scattered snow showers. Residents should prepare for possibly hazardous travel conditions and increased energy demands as overnight temperatures are expected to drop sharply, particularly in the eastern regions.

Much of Latvia will experience a mix of cloudy skies and scattered light snow over the next few days, though the eastern region of Latgale is expected to see sunshine Thursday and Friday. A weak to moderate south to southeast wind will accompany the conditions.

Temperatures will plummet in many areas, particularly in Latgale and parts of Vidzeme, where overnight lows could reach approximately -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit). Elsewhere in the country, the cold will be less severe. Daytime highs will generally range from -4 to -9 degrees Celsius (25 to 16 degrees Fahrenheit), with slightly colder temperatures persisting in eastern regions.

Looking ahead, the forecast indicates little precipitation next week, with temperatures remaining below freezing. According to data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, the final two weeks of January are currently projected to be 6-9 degrees Celsius (11-16 degrees Fahrenheit) colder than average for Latvia. The extended cold snap could impact infrastructure and daily life across the country.
