Latvia’s women’s beach volleyball duo secured a spot in the elimination round at the “Elite 16” tournament in Jūrmala, Latvia, on Friday, after a 2-1 performance in group play. They initially fell to Americans Corinne Savvy and Devon Newberry with scores of 18-21, 22-20, and 10-15.
However, the Latvian pair rebounded with a 2-0 victory (21-13, 22-20) against Brazil’s Maiela Martins Silva Kaissa and Talita Simonetti. This result gave the Latvian duo a 2-1 record, earning them second place in their group and a coveted berth in the playoff stages, which begin Friday.
In men’s competition, Latvia’s Ardis Bedrītis and Artūrs Rinkevičs, who qualified for the main draw and were seeded 21st, have faced two defeats. They will conclude their group play on Friday against another Brazilian team, Artur da Silva and Adrielson dos Santos (16).
This tournament in Jūrmala marks the first of seven “Elite 16” events on the professional tour. The “Pro Beach Tour” is structured with “Elite 16” competitions as the highest tier, followed by “Challenge” and then “Futures” events.
