Rare Bird Egg Collection Returns to Latvia from Canada
A rare and extensive ornithological archive has returned to its roots in Latvia, now serving as a centerpiece at the Viļaka Museum. The Latvian bird egg collection at the Viļaka Museum features 636 eggs representing 130 different species, including a variety of native Latvian and exotic birds.
The Spravniks collection has a long history of international transit. From 1974 until August 2014, the collection was housed at the Latvian center in Toronto, Canada. In late 2014, Velta Spravniks and her family donated the collection to the museum in Viļaka, the birthplace of E. Spravniks.
This repatriation underscores the importance of preserving natural history and maintaining cultural links between the Latvian diaspora and their ancestral homes. The museum’s current exhibition allows visitors to examine the diversity of avian life through this meticulously preserved assembly.
In addition to the egg collection, the museum offers exhibits focused on the military heritage of the Viļaka region. The institution is also integrated into the “Latvijas skolas soma” educational program, making it a key resource for student excursions and family outings.
Located at Balvu iela 13 in Viļaka, Balvu novads, the museum is a destination for those exploring the region via bicycle. It is situated along established routes, including the “Green Path” (Gulbene-Balvi-Viļaka, No. 15) and the “Tepenīcas aplis” loop (No. 788).
