Latvia’s Prime Minister Evika Siliņa will present her annual report on the Cabinet of Ministers’ accomplishments and planned activities to the Saeima on Thursday, March 12. The presentation comes as lawmakers prepare to vote on several key pieces of legislation.
Among the issues slated for debate, the Saeima will hold a final vote on amendments to the “Law on Pollution,” which would grant municipalities greater authority to regulate noise levels from entertainment venues. This move aims to address concerns about disturbances in residential areas.
Deputies will also consider a modern draft law in its second reading concerning the protection of individuals acting in the public interest. Related amendments to the Civil Procedure Law are also on the agenda, designed to strengthen protections for journalists, researchers, activists, and others who advocate for public concerns against potentially abusive lawsuits. The legislation underscores the importance of a free press and civic engagement.
Further discussion is planned for amendments to the Zemessardze Law, also in its second reading. These changes would allow individuals unable to serve in the Zemessardze – Latvia’s State Defence Service – to contribute their knowledge and skills to the organization.
A total of 21 issues are currently on the agenda for the Saeima’s March 12 session, though lawmakers have proposed several modifications to the approved schedule. The Legal Affairs Commission has requested a conceptual review of amendments to the Operational Activity Law, which would aim to improve the fight against cartels and expand the ability to detect other crimes.
Officials will be available to answer questions from deputies at 5:00 PM local time on Thursday.
The public can follow the Saeima sessions on the parliament’s website www.saeima.lv, as well as on its Facebook and YouTube accounts.
