Brazilian Justice Minister André Mendonça has ordered a federal police investigation into a data leak related to a probe of the Banco Master, also known as the Master Bank. The inquiry comes after the defense team for banker Daniel Vorcaro alleged that sensitive information was leaked following its submission to a parliamentary commission.

According to reports, the leaked material included messages exchanged between Vorcaro and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre Moraes on the day Vorcaro was first arrested. The defense argued the breach occurred after the information was provided to the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into Social Security (CPMI) at Mendonça’s direction.

Mendonça stated that maintaining the confidentiality of investigative data is paramount, and any breach of that confidentiality is a serious concern. “The disclosure of confidential data relating to an individual under investigation is not authorized,” the minister said. “Quite the contrary, it places a responsibility on the authority that received the restricted-access information to maintain its confidentiality.”

The documents in question were originally restricted by a previous Supreme Court minister, Dias Toffoli, but were later released to the CPMI by Mendonça. The federal police affirmed their commitment to upholding security standards and protecting fundamental rights, including privacy, throughout their investigations. The police also stated that information included in the Operation Compliance Zero investigation was relevant to the case and did not include private details.

The president of the CPMI, Carlos Viana, has denied any wrongdoing, stating the commission did not disclose any classified material involving Supreme Court justices. Viana said the commission is working to determine the source of the leaked documents. This denial came after Moraes indicated that prints of messages purportedly sent by Vorcaro did not align with his own communication records.

An analysis of Vorcaro’s data revealed the messages were linked to contacts other than Moraes, according to a statement from the Supreme Court. The names and contact information associated with the messages were reportedly included in materials made available to the press by the CPMI.

The CPMI’s session scheduled for March 5, 2026, was canceled due to the relator, Alfredo Gaspar, experiencing health issues. The session was to include a vote on a request to access records related to Fabiano Zettel, Vorcaro’s nephew, who was recently arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation. The cancellation drew criticism from some lawmakers who argued another relator should have been appointed.

The unfolding situation highlights the complexities of maintaining confidentiality in high-profile investigations and the potential for sensitive information to be compromised during the legal process.
