Israel Threatens Control of Southern Lebanon Up to the Litani River
Israel is considering establishing a security zone in southern Lebanon extending to the Litani River, escalating tensions in the region. The move comes amid ongoing clashes with Hezbollah and increasing concerns about regional stability.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated Tuesday that Israeli forces would control a “security zone” in southern Lebanon reaching the Litani River. “All five bridges over the Litani River that were used by Hezbollah to transport terrorists and weapons have been destroyed, and the Israeli army will control the remaining bridges and the security zone extending to the Litani,” Gallant said during a visit to a military command center in Israel, according to Sky News Arabia.
This zone would extend approximately 19 miles (30 kilometers) from the Israeli border. Minister Gallant also indicated that displaced residents “will not return to south of the Litani River before the security of residents of the north” of Israel is ensured.
The consideration of expanded control follows reports that Israel has already destroyed five bridges over the Litani River since March 2, Al Quds reported.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich earlier on Monday called for Israel to move its borders with Lebanon to the Litani River, stating that the military campaign in Lebanon “must end with a completely different reality, not only with the decision regarding Hezbollah, but also with a change in Israel’s borders.” He added, “I say here unequivocally… everywhere and in every discussion also… the recent Israeli borders must be at the Litani.”
Hezbollah has reportedly launched 53 attacks on Israeli sites, according to reports from Al-Sharouk.
The escalation comes as Israel continues to target areas in Lebanon, with reports indicating the destruction of homes in villages near the border as part of a campaign Israel says is aimed at Hezbollah, not civilians, Masrawy.com reported. The situation highlights the increasing complexity of the conflict and the potential for further regional instability.
Recent reports also indicate Hezbollah targeted an Israeli radar with drones, the Today Seventh reported.
The escalating situation is also contributing to a growing displacement crisis in southern Lebanon, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm.
