Lech Poznań: Leader & Title Defence – Ekstraklasa Update

Lech Poznań has risen to the top of the PKO BP Ekstraklasa standings with eight matches remaining in the season, a position the club hasn’t held at this stage of the campaign in the 21st century. This sets up a compelling title defense scenario, as Lech hasn’t been the league leader at this point in previous championship-winning seasons.

Ahead of the 26th matchday, Lech Poznań was level on points with Zagłębie and Jagiellonia, but while those two teams both suffered defeats, Lech delivered a dominant performance at Bułgarska, defeating the league’s bottom side 4-1. This victory propelled them to the coveted top spot, holding a three-point advantage over their closest rivals.

Following the match, Niels Frederiksen, the Lech manager, acknowledged the team’s performance but also noted the potential for the game to have slipped away. His comments came after a strong showing against Termalica. The match against Bruk-Bet was a positive display, though it didn’t quite reach the heights of last season’s 8-1 victory over Puszcza Niepołomice, demonstrating the team’s growing potential under the Danish coach.

“We have a lot to be happy about after this match. We’ve won six of our last seven league games, and I don’t think anyone in the Ekstraklasa can say the same. We are leaders, and that’s where we want to stay. That’s our ambition, while I know this win doesn’t mean everything, it doesn’t decide anything. For 75 minutes, we were in complete control, playing incredibly well in the first half, waiting for that first goal which made things easier. For 15 minutes, we weren’t good in our game, there was nervousness, and my players’ legs were soft when they lost control. We regained it over time, and perhaps the opponent’s red card helped us,” Frederiksen said.

The Final Stretch

Frederiksen is clear about his team’s intentions – “We are leaders, and that’s where we want to stay.” And with good reason. After 26 rounds of play, Lech is now the clear favorite to secure the Polish championship. This assessment is supported not only by their position in the table but also by the quality and experience within the squad, with many players and staff having tasted championship success last year.

The team is aiming to defend their title, a feat Lech hasn’t achieved since the 1980s and 90s. A successful defense would also allow Lech to add a golden star to their club crest, signifying at least 10 Polish championship titles – an honor currently held by only four clubs: Ruch, Górnik, Legia, and Wisła.

Frederiksen has already made history at Lech, becoming the first foreign coach to win a trophy with the club, and a successful title defense would place him alongside Maciej Skorża and the late Wojciech Łazarek as the only managers to lead Lech to at least two championships.

All of this is within reach, but complacency cannot set in. Lech’s next challenge comes in Białystok after the international break, where a loss could see them relinquish the lead, as the head-to-head record would favor Jagiellonia. Although, as it stands, Lech holds all the cards.

“I rate the last period from January 31st as a ‘5’ out of ‘6’, as we also dropped out of the Conference League. We’ve had little training for eight months, now there will be more time for it, but we have to be careful. We can’t fall into the trap that Jagiellonia fell into, who after being eliminated from the Conference League, only won once in the Ekstraklasa. We have all the tools to be even better in the coming weeks than in recent matches,” Frederiksen cautioned against overconfidence.

Consistency is Key

Strong runs of form are crucial for success in the Ekstraklasa this season, particularly during the busy spring schedule for Lech Poznań. In 50 days in 2026, “Kolejorz” played 14 matches across three different competitions. They had only one week – between February 7th and 15th – without a mid-week fixture. Five of those matches were played within 72 hours of each other, minimizing recovery time for the players.

There were setbacks, with five losses in those 14 matches, contributing to their elimination from the Conference League and the Polish Cup. However, nine wins – seven in their last eight league games – have propelled Lech to a commanding position in the title race.

  • Lech’s remaining schedule: Jagiellonia (H), GKS (A), Pogoń (H), Legia (A), Motor (H), Arka (A), Radomiak (H), Wisła Płock (A)

The last two championship wins for Lech were characterized by strong finishes without defeat. To secure the title this season, Lech will need at least a draw in Białystok, followed by at least seven wins in their remaining seven matches (depending on the results of Zagłębie). This is certainly achievable.

In the 2010 season, when Lech trailed Wisła Kraków by four points with eight games to go, they finished with seven wins and one draw. In 2015, they overcame a five-point deficit to Legia with six wins and two draws. Last season, they overturned a three-point gap to Raków Częstochowa with six wins and two draws. Given their current form, a similar finish would almost certainly deliver the championship to Lech.

This is a situation Lech hasn’t faced in the 21st century, where they’ve entered the final stretch of the season as the league leader. They’ve always been the chasers, successfully overcoming deficits in 2010, 2015, 2022, and 2025. Now, they are the team to beat.

Lech’s position with eight games remaining in previous championship seasons:

  • 2010: Round 22 – Wisła Kraków 47 points, Lech 43 – Final standings: Wisła 62, Lech 65,
  • 2015: Round 29 (split into championship and relegation groups) – Legia 54 pts, Lech 51 – Final standings: Legia 42, Lech 43,
  • 2022: Round 26 – Pogoń 53, Raków 52, Lech 52 – Final standings: Pogoń 65, Raków 69, Lech 72,
  • 2025: Round 26 – Raków 55, Jagiellonia 51, Lech 50 – Final standings: Raków 69, Jagiellonia 61, Lech 70.
